4 arrested in Cheatham Co. dog fighting ring

ASHLAND CITY, TN (WSMV) -

Four men now face multiple counts of animal cruelty after investigators raided a dog fighting ring in Cheatham County in November.

The Cheatham County grand jury Monday indicted:

* James Callis, 31, of Ashland City, TN, charged with one count of animal fighting, 60 counts of animal cruelty and one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

* Gary Phelps, 50, of Ashland City, TN, charged with one count of animal fighting, 60 counts of animal cruelty, one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

* Arsenio Williams, 29, of Nashville was charged with one count of animal fighting, 60 counts of animal cruelty and one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

* Avery Bell, 54, of Ashland City, TN, was charged with one count of animal fighting, 60 counts of animal cruelty, one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, setting fire to personal property and burning without a permit.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Bell and Phelps are cousins and all four suspects are friends.

On Nov. 22, the Cheatham County Fire Department responded to a brush fire at Bell's residence on Buckeye Road.  When they arrived, they found numerous dogs chained in the woods.

Cheatham County Animal Control removed about 60 dogs that showed signs of fighting. Dog fighting paraphernalia were also found on the property.

All four suspects are being held at the Cheatham County Jail and are being held on $50,000 bond.
