Suspected thieves nabbed by homeowner, retired officer

What started out as an attempt to steal metal from the roof of an abandoned home ended with the suspects in the back of a Metro patrol car.

Monica Jett, a retired Metro police officer, has owned the home for years. She lives down the street from the property. Jett was alerted to the theft by a concerned neighbor. She immediately retrieved her service revolver and drove the short distance to confront the suspected thieves.

"Two gentleman were up here liberating my home of the metal. They were putting metal in the back of their truck, they had it loaded down," said Jett.

Jett told Channel 4 News, when she arrived, the men were getting ready to take off. She held the two men at bay until police arrived. For Jett this was her way of drawing a line in the sand.

"You can't let someone steal from your property or your home, and your home is as far away as someone can take you. So you have to make up your mind whether you want to do right, or take a chance on them coming back," said Jett.

Jett who has decades of police work behind her, said holding a gun on someone can be very dangerous. She told Channel 4 News, "let police handle that part."
