Pedestrian recovering after hit, left in ditch for 10 hours

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A young mother nearly killed in a hit-and-run crash in October 2012 is progressing in a way no one expected.

Doctors told Joi Wilford she may never walk again, but this week she got up and started taking steps.

"I didn't think I would walk again. They were telling me I would probably be paralyzed, wheel-chair bound," Wilford said.

A pickup truck hit the 26-year-old as she walked to work on Old Due West Avenue in Hermitage in daylight.

The driver kept going, and the young mother waited helplessly for 10 hours in a ditch until her family found her.

She was hospitalized with a broken hip, legs, neck and a brain injury, but less than three months later she is taking steps neither she, nor doctors, thought she would.

In fact, she is making so much progress she is now out of the rehabilitation hospital and back at home. Even her therapist called it a miracle.

"I love being home, so for me to get here, it was just a hurdle that I had crossed," Wilford said. "I feel very blessed that I do have a second, first chance to relive my life again and get back to doing the things that I was doing before."

Wilford still has a lot of work to do before she is close to a full recovery, but she said she can't wait to roll around again with her kids.

While she still has pain, she said what is most hurtful is the fact the 82-year-old driver who kept going, and later surrendered to police, still has not reached out to her.

"It does make me very emotional that there hasn't been him reaching out or anything. It does bother me," she said.

Kenneth Burd was cited with a misdemeanor for leaving the scene of a crash and for failing to render aid or report the accident. According to his attorney, he has a health condition that may have been a factor in the crash.
