New mothers celebrate with New Year's babies

Posted: Updated:

New Year's Day means a break for many people, but it is also a day where memories are made. That was certainly the case for a Nashville mom and dad who welcomed a new baby boy just after midnight.

"Oh, it's the New Year's baby. I was still in shock after delivering," said mother Nancy Feliciano.

At 12:01 a.m., Yasmani Rodriguez Jr. became the first baby born in 2013 at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

With everyone happy and healthy, mom could take a moment to look ahead to Yasmani's birthday celebrations down the road.

"For him, when he gets older, he can party it up when he turns 21," Feliciano said.

Murfreesboro's first baby of 2013 chose a New Year's Eve party to begin his big arrival.

Deysi Duke said she went into labor while at a friend's party and then delivered her son, Malachi, just after 7 a.m.

His birth became somewhat of a competition, as Duke said Malachi arrived just one minute before the baby across the hall.

And at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Gabriela Flores spent almost all of New Year's Eve in labor.

Flores said she began having pains at 5 a.m. Monday but didn't give birth until 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The delay paid off, as she received a nice gift basket and a rare distinction. Her little girl, Jessleen, became the first baby of the year born at Baptist.
