A fight over drugs and $42 resulted in the shooting death of a man in Sumner County Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The sheriff's office was called at about 3 p.m. to the 800 block of Douglas Lane just outside Gallatin after receiving a report that one person was shot.

Investigators said a homeowner, Allen Ray Mefford, fired a single round from a long gun after an acquaintance, William B. Reecer, 49, stopped in the middle of the road and began approaching his home.

Reecer was injured in the shooting and died from his injuries. Mefford was arrested and faces charges of second degree murder.

"It's the toughest thing that's ever happened to me. I've had a lot of deaths in the family, but this tears your heart out," said Reecer's father, William Reecer.

Father and son share the same name, but the elder Reecer said since a young age everyone has called his son Bodie.

Investigators said the suspect and victim had been friends for about a decade.

Investigators also said they have dealt with both of these men in the past on separate occasions, but they wouldn't elaborate.

At a bond hearing Wednesday, Mefford showed no emotion as the judge kept his bond set at $500,000.

Although Mefford admitted several times to shooting his friend, his attorney said the defense will not be treated any differently.

"Anytime you have a homicide case it's difficult. Anytime. This case is no different," said attorney Mike Carter.

A court date for Mefford is set for Jan. 16.
