Smyrna police seeking answers to woman's murder

Detectives are trying to piece together what happened in the hours leading up to a woman's murder.

At first, police thought they were responding to a drug overdose. But, when they got there, they discovered a gruesome crime scene.

Investigators say the suspect called Smyrna Police Wednesday morning claiming his girlfriend had overdosed. But when detectives got to his home on Bolton Drive, they quickly realized they had a murder investigation on their hands.

On part of the 911 call obtained by Channel 4, you can hear dispatchers talking about the call they received from Kerry Tomlin.

"His girlfriend has taking something and when I disconnected he wasn't sure if she was breathing," said the dispatcher.

Smyrna Police Chief Kevin Arnold said it didn't take his detectives long to realize Maria Lambert died of something much more sinister.

"Due to the condition of the home and the condition of the victim, they could tell there was more to this story than a drug overdose," said Arnold.

Police said Lambert was bludgeoned and stabbed to death inside Tomlin's home. There is still no word yet on what the motive may have been. Police said there were signs of a struggle inside the home. They believe an argument between the couple got out of hand.

Tomlin is behind bars at the Rutherford County Jail charged with murder and two children are without their mother this holiday season.

Police have been called to Tomlin's home before. Those calls include a welfare check, obscene or harassing calls, as well as a report of a suspicious vehicle. Smyrna Police said they've also arrested Tomlin twice before for driving under the influence.

Police said Tomlin is not talking with investigators. He is being held on $800,000 bond and will appear in court next month.
