Smyrna police can only speculate what led up to a murder inside a home this morning.

What they do know though, is it was a violent encounter.

"You have a family that's impacted, especially during the holiday season, and two children without a mother now," said Smyrna Police Chief Kevin Arnold.

Kerry Tomlin, 42, called Smyrna police about 5 a.m. today. Police said he told them Maria Lambert had overdosed at his house on Bolton Drive.

When police arrived minutes later, they quickly discovered Lambert died from something more sinister.

"Due to the condition of the home and the condition of the victim, they could tell there was more to this story than a drug overdose," said Arnold.

Police believe Lambert was beaten and stabbed. Lambert's injuries even shocked Arnold.

"The injuries the victim sustained were probably one of the more severe I've ever seen," said Arnold.

Tomlin and Lambert were in a relationship, but police said early this morning an argument had gotten out of control.

"There was evidence indicating there had been some type of struggle," said Arnold.

A few neighbors said Tomlin wasn't very social, however another neighbor described him as caring and easy going, someone who never lost his temper.

Police hope events leading up to this morning's murder will help them with a motive.

"We're trying to get a time line of everything that has happened within the past 24 hours," said Arnold.

Christmas decorations could still be seen through the window as a patrol car stationed in front of the house kept the curious away.

"This leaves a trail of devastation and things will take years to be able to get over," said Arnold.

Tomlin is not talking to police. He's being held on an $800,000 bond in the Rutherford County Jail. His first court date is in General Sessions Court in Smyrna on Jan. 3.
