Areas west of Nashville saw a few inches of snow Wednesday from a winter storm that blasted the Midwest and Southern states.
Around 2 p.m., there were reports of ice forming on bridges and overpasses in Spring Hill. Police have advised drivers to use caution when traveling on Saturn Parkway. The Tennessee Department of Transportation was notified to sand the road.
Flakes started flying in Nashville around 7:30 a.m., but there was only a trace of accumulation in Davidson County.
Look for brisk northwest winds this afternoon with sustained speeds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts to 35 mph. Light snow or flurries will continue through the afternoon across most of Middle Tennessee with a dusting possible along the Kentucky border.
Temperatures will remain in the low to middle 30s Wednesday but will fall below freezing during the early evening.
This is the first time that at least a trace of snow has fallen in Nashville since Feb. 19 of this year when 0.2 inch fell, according to the National Weather Service.
Last winter's total snowfall was 0.4 inch in Nashville. Normal winter snowfall is 8.5 inches.
Winter Weather Advisory Canceled
A winter weather advisory that was in effect until 4 p.m. for northern Middle Tennessee, including Nashville, has been canceled. Much of western Kentucky remains under the advisory until 6 p.m.
Most of Tennessee avoided a heavy impact from the storm that has blanketed much of the country's midsection.
Most roads will dry before overnight temperatures can cause them to freeze Wednesday night.
Parts of West Tennessee got between an inch and three inches of snow and crews with the Tennessee Department of Transportation were out early Wednesday morning to salt and plow bridges and overpasses, said Nichole Lawrence, a TDOT spokeswoman in Jackson. Lawrence said ice accumulation on the roads could start again on Wednesday evening.
In East Tennessee, the passing winter storm is expected to create potentially damaging high winds between 30 and 40 mph in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains on Wednesday.
Western Kentucky snow
A blizzard warning is in effect until noon for counties in western Kentucky. Areas have seen 6-12 inches of snow from the storm. Wind gusts in this area will be 30-40 mph.
Road conditions will be slow to improve in locations that received heavy snow.
Forecasters compared this storm to the Christmas week storm in 2004 that snarled highways across the region, closing some. Areas of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois are expecting 10 inches or more of snow.
Drivers are advised to closely monitor the weather forecast and adjust their travel plans.
