Car plunges off Lawrenceburg bridge; firefighters save children

Posted: Updated:

A car tumbled 40 feet over a bridge into a chilly creek in Lawrenceburg early Saturday morning, forcing firefighters to brave the chilly waters to save two children.

The vehicle crashed on South Locust Avenue around 4:30 a.m. and then tumbled over the Shoal Creek Bridge. The vehicle landed upside down in the water.

There were two adults and two children were in the car. The adults managed to get out on their own, but the children were trapped.

A pair of Lawrenceburg firefighters, with the help of police officers, jumped into the water to save them.

One of the children, a 4-year-old boy, is in stable condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. The firefighters were taken to Crockett Hospital with hypothermia symptoms and later released.
