A suspect is accused of killing a man in Lebanon and then shooting at a car on Interstate 40 a short time later.
Desmine Watts, 21, was shot and killed Thursday afternoon on the front porch of a home in Wilson County.
Watts was found dead around 4 p.m. in the 300 block of South Maple Street in Lebanon. He was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Shooting on I-40
Around 4:30 p.m., officers responded to Interstate 40 West at mile marker 225 mile marker in Mount Juliet after a caller to 911 said their vehicle had been shot.
The victim's vehicle was occupied with three adults and two children when the shot was fired at them. Investigators determined that the vehicle was shot once in the driver's door.
Fortunately, none in the car was hurt.
Lebanon police later charged Michael Desmond Starks, 27, in both cases, and investigators are working to determine whether he was responsible in a third shooting later Thursday night.
Lebanon Police Chief Scott Bowen said Starks is a dangerous man who never should have had access to a gun.
"We've got a convicted felon, who's been convicted of drug charges and aggravated assault, and he's carrying a gun and shoots and kills somebody," Bowen said. "That's our problem, okay. For us, in police, very seldom do we deal with people who have legal gun permits."
In both shootings, police said Starks knew his victims, but a motive has not been determined in either case.
For now, Starks is charged with criminal homicide, five counts of aggravated assault and five counts of reckless endangerment.
Starks is currently being held at the Wilson County Jail on $1 million bond.
