A well-known physician in Montgomery County has been killed in a plane crash in North Carolina.

Retired Col. Tom Deal died Sunday while piloting a small plane southwest of Fayetteville Airport, according to the Leaf Chronicle newspaper.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Piper Cherokee was on final approach to the airport when it went down in the woods.

Deal was the only person on board.

The FAA is still investigating the cause of the crash.

Deal was acting chief of surgery at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center.

He was a graduate of Austin Peay State University and had a practice in Clarksville for a long time.

Deal also served as a volunteer for Montgomery County's K-9 search and rescue team.
