NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Residents woke up to smoke overnight when a fire ripped through their west Nashville apartment complex.

The fire occurred on 26th Avenue North.

Fire investigators said the family, which included a mother and three teenagers, was trying to heat their home and turned on an oven for a source or heat.  However, investigators have not named an official cause of the fire.

The fire started in the kitchen and then spread to the attic.

Smoke was pouring out of the triplex when crews arrived on scene.  Residents in all three apartments at the complex were able to escape safely.

A neighbor helped alert the residents.

The apartment where the fire originated is a total loss, said crews.
