Ft. Campbell soldiers return after 9-month deployment

Posted: Updated:

Just in time for the holidays, more than 100 Ft. Campbell soldiers are back home.

One soldier returning from Afghanistan surprised his girlfriend with a proposal.

For most of the past year, members of the Second Brigade Combat Team from the 101st Airborne Division helped train Afghan forces.

Today they have a more desirable mission - spend a little quality time with their loved ones.

It's a moment that couldn't arrive soon enough for the kids, wives, husbands and parents of the Second Brigade Combat Team.

Hero by hero they got off the plane.

Caitlin Stein eagerly awaited for her college sweetheart to be dismissed and finally welcome him home.

"I had already started my tears when I saw him got off the plane," said Stein.

Stein's tears would continue to fall when Lt. Mathew Miller got down on knee, surrounded by his fellow soldiers, and asked her to marry him.

"I was wondering why his hands were shaking," said Stein.

Miller said he's had this moment in the plans for weeks.

"I didn't think I could wait much longer after coming home," said Miller. "She was perfect, you know, supporting a deployed soldier."

To get the perfect ring, Miller enlisted his parents help.

"I said, 'I'm not picking out the ring for your girlfriend,'" said Carolyn Miller, the soldier's mom. "He goes, 'No, no. I already have it picked out.' So he sent us a link."

The parents brought the ring along and slipped it to their son without Stein knowing.

"Was it hard to keep the secret from her," asked Matthew Miller.

"It was very hard because we're trying to talk in code," said Carolyn Miller. "She was like what are you guys talking about."

Today was a heartfelt homecoming this couple is bound to remember for many years to come.

In all 116 soldiers from the Second Brigade Combat Team returned to Ft. Campbell today.
