SUV crashes through building, 18-month-old barely scratched

A father in Shelbyville came within inches of losing his 18-month-old son.

Matthew Hicks told Channel 4 News his son was asleep at his father's printing business on Highway 41-A in a small apartment when a car came crashing through the building on Dec. 8.

"All I see is headlights coming up, and I shouted, 'Oh no,'" said Hicks.

Police say Timothy Leverette was driving drunk when he lost control of his SUV. Kayden Hicks, who is 18 months old, was sleeping as the car barreled through the building. Debris was thrown everywhere, but the toddler wasn't touched.

"He looked like, 'What the heck just happened?'" said Hicks.

Kayden normally sleeps in a crib, but on the night of the crash, his father decided to put his son in a bed. That move probably saved the boy's life.

"That crib was destroyed. There are metal rods sticking through the bottom of it," said Hicks.

The debris pushed the bed forward out of harm's way.

Just seconds after the crash, Hicks' mind began to race as he looked at the damage.

"For a fraction of a second, I thought I lost my son. I was so relieved when I heard him cry, I knew at that point my son was alive," said Hicks.

When Hicks saw his little boy safe in the rubble, nothing else mattered.

"He's pretty much the reason I get up and go every day. I don't know what I would do without him," said Hicks.
