Family loses home, Christmas presents in fire

COTTONTOWN, TN (WSMV) -

A family in Sumner County escaped a fast-moving fire on Wednesday morning but lost their home and holiday gifts.

The fire occurred in the 2200 block of Highway 25 in Cottontown, TN.  Investigators said the fire possibly started in the living room, near their Christmas tree.

Joshua Anders, his wife and three children call it home.

"It's really not real to me yet. I have three kids and one on the way. My wife's eight months pregnant," said Anders.

The couple's 4-year-old daughter spotted smoke inside the family's home and alerted her mother. She then ran outside and flagged down a passing Sumner County deputy.

"Apparently she was watching it and was just like, 'Mommy, mommy, there's a fire. There's a fire,'" said Anders.

Firefighters tried but could not save much, and for now cannot pinpoint a cause.

"I'm racking my brain trying to figure it out. The Christmas tree is the only thing I can think of," said Anders.

The family lost clothing, memories and birthday presents that their 4-year-old daughter just opened on Tuesday.

"Everything she just opened burned up in the flames," said Anders.

Their Christmas presents are suddenly gone too. It's a tough loss for a family holding tight to perspective.

"All this stuff can be replaced. We're not going to identify bodies and that's all. I'm just thankful for that. I'm thankful they're alive," said Audrey Jones, Anders' mother-in-law.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.

An account to help Tiffany Anders has been set up. Make donations to benefit Tiffany Anders at any Volunteer State Bank location.
