She was trusted to keep track of the money for a local soccer association for kids, but police say the treasurer was taking it for herself. Cynthia Ann Mangrum of Fairview is accused of embezzling more than $60,000 from the Fairview Soccer Association over a four-year period.
"These are dollars that parents and grandparents put together to give to their kids to give them the opportunity to participate," said Lt. Roy Russell of the Fairview Police Department. "It's very damaging. It would be very damaging in a large town. Obviously, in a small town, it does make it very disturbing. The charging was in excess of $60,000. We think it's closer to $85,000."
Police said the missing money was revealed to the association when Mangrum confessed to them in a meeting she had taken it. Friday, Mangrum was arrested with no incident and charged with theft of property of more than $60,000.
When reached, both Mangrum and her family declined comment on the charges. Police said they're uncertain how the money was used.
Fairview residents described Mangrum as a well-known, well-liked member of the community.
"As far as I know, she has no history," said Russell. "It's certainly out of character. She's very well-known in this area and up until this incident had a very good reputation."
Mangrum's bond was set at $25,000 after her arrest Friday, but she has since been released.
