Fluffo gave Middle Tennesseans good night's sleep for 80 years

Posted: Updated:

For years Middle Tennesseans got a good night's sleep, thanks to Fluffo.

That name and that mattress are part of an 80-year-old Nashville company that's saying goodbye.

The name Capitol City Mattress isn't likely to ring any bells, even though they've been in Nashville since 1930.

But say the word Fluffo, and the bell goes off.

That mattress maker's days of sending people off into dreamland are over.

"I'd love to see it go on and on, the name Fluffo, but I don't have anybody ready to go into it with all the competition," said Horace Bass, the company's owner.

Bass started naming his company's mattresses 30 years ago, The Snuggler, The Snoozer and The Fluffo, hoping it would boost sales.

People at first told him it was silly and crazy and it wouldn't work, but it did. The name, the quality and Bass' live commercials on Channel 4's Ralph Emery Show made them famous.

This week sleep isn't in the plans, it's taking high energy to get everything in the warehouse ready for final sale at auction.

The sign still lights up and so does Bass, a sermon-delivering United Methodist preacher who loves this question.

"Why did you buy a mattress company?" said Bass. "Because I saw so many people go to sleep in church on Sunday mornings, I figured they needed a better place to sleep."

Today, a slow economy and the rising price of steel and foam has put this company to sleep - where quality will be the legacy.

"There's nothing in this mattress not made of top-notch material," said Bass.

And that's Bass still getting the word out right up until the end.

The auction takes place Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Fluffo warehouse at 901 Woodland St. in Nashville.
