Historical Smokies album gets Grammy nomination

Posted: Updated:

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) - The album Old-Time Smoky Mountain Music has been nominated for a Grammy Award for best historical album.

The CD is produced by the national park's nonprofit educational partner, Great Smoky Mountains Association. It includes 34 historic songs recorded in 1939 by Joseph Hall.

Hall recorded the songs just as the creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park was forcing hundreds of families to leave their mountain homes. His mission was to preserve the speech and music of the Smokies before the unique culture disappeared.

In making the CD, the association was able to track down 2 of the original musicians who were still alive and 18 relatives of some of the other musicians. Many sent in photographs and anecdotes that became part of the CD's 40-page liner notes booklet.
