CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A student at a Clarksville elementary school has been discovered with bacterial meningitis.

The student, who attends Kenwood Elementary, has bacterial meningitis caused by strep throat, the school system confirmed.

"We have just received confirmation from the State Health Department that it has investigated the type of meningitis contracted by a student at Kenwood Elementary," said Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools spokesperson Elise Shelton. "They have determined it is not the kind of meningitis to cause a public health risk.

"The health department stated no precautionary measures are necessary and that parents do not need to be concerned about any risk to their children.

Shelton said parents have received two calls today from the school system updating them about the situation.
