Customers angry after Clarksville gym abruptly closes its doors

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

National Fitness Center in Clarksville abruptly closed and clients said they can't get an answer about their memberships or their money.

"Come in Monday night all the cash registers, the scanner, the drinks were all gone," former member Ross Milliken said.

In hindsight Milliken said he should have seen it coming. Instead he was blindsided Tuesday when he came to National Fitness Center in Clarksville to work out as he'd done for the past two years, only to find locked doors and a sign indicating the gym was closing because of a lease dispute.

"I started calling corporate then and no one would give me any answers," Milliken said.

"This is my first time finding out anything about it," said Mark Robinson, who was also caught off guard.

Robinson said he had to see for himself Friday night after a friend told him his gym was closed.

"I'm a bit perturbed and I guess they had some problems I was unaware of," Robinson said.

In fact, National Fitness, which has several locations in Knoxville and Chattanooga, has been plagued with problems. Although it's not accredited the Better Business Bureau rated it an "F." The Clarksville facility has received 38 complaints in the last three years, mainly for problems with its services and billing.

Friday night we caught crews from local competitor, Clarksville Athletic Club, clearing out the gym.

"On Wednesday morning our owner received a phone call asking if we wanted to purchase the equipment," Brad Butler of Clarksville Athletic Club explained.

Customers who had their dues drafted out of their account every month should see those drafts canceled. But those who paid in advance may not get their money back.

Channel 4 called National Fitness Center's corporate office but couldn't get through to anyone. We also called one of their Knoxville facilities and were told someone would call us back. They never did.
