Experts offer tips on choosing the right Christmas tree

Posted: Updated:

Nearly three-fourths of the estimated 40 million Americans who displayed a Christmas tree last year opted for a real tree rather than a fake.

The experts at Santa's Christmas Trees in 12 South are as busy as Santa's elves, and they said this weekend will be their busiest of the entire holiday season.

"The first weekend in December, or the weekend following Thanksgiving, is always the biggest," said Jim McLeod, with Santa's Christmas Trees.

However, many of those consumers who buy real trees don't have a clue what they should be paying or how to tell whether they were getting a quality tree.

"We were just talking about prices and saying, 'well, we don't know if that's a lot or a little. We may need to do a little research,'" said shopper Susan Bursch.

McLeod said the most important question to ask is about the freshness of the tree.

"They should ask that at the Christmas tree lot or the store. Or if they're at a chain store, they should ask, 'when were these trees cut?'" McLeod said.

Consumers can even test the tree themselves by running their fingers down the length of a limb from the trunk, outward several times. If needles come off, the tree is likely to go bare by Christmas.
