Teen collects DVDs to help patients at Vandy Children's Hospital

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

One Nashville girl knows very much what it feels like to be a child in a scary medical situation, and she also knows that a little diversion can help ease the pain in a hospital bed.

Hannah Huth, 15, helped deliver quite a gift Friday at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital just in time for Christmas.

More than 2,100 DVDs collected over the past year at area schools will be more than just entertainment for the many patients where Hannah once stayed.

"Everyone that's staying here overnight obviously has something on their mind, and so it's great for them to be able to take a break for an hour or two," she said.

At just 3 years old, doctors found a tumor in Hannah's brain. Multiple surgeries and weeks in the hospital followed, and during those stays she realized the small things - like a movie - could brighten the day.

She also realized the hospital's selection could use an upgrade.

"It's nice to be able to have a variety, and especially as an older patient, have some movies that aren't like Barney or Blue's Clues," Hannah said.

"Even though Hannah doesn't meet the patients and families personally, when families ask us where these donations come from and we tell them, they will feel a sense of comfort and support from the community," said Stephanie Van Dyke, director of volunteer services at the hospital.

Hannah can't stop smiling, knowing the DVDs she helped collect will lead to smiles for other kids in the hospital.

This was Hannah's second DVD drive for the hospital. She organized the first one about 10 years ago and plans to do another DVD drive in the future to include even more schools.
