A South Carolina man is recovering after he said he got sick when he discovered he won $1 million in Wednesday's Powerball drawing.
While the winning tickets for the $579 million jackpot were sold in Arizona and Missouri, there were several Match 5 winners in the Carolinas, including Jerry Hucks, of Rock Hill.
Hucks told South Carolina Education Lottery officials that he checked his winning ticket before heading home from work early this morning in Cleveland, NC.
To make sure he had won, he showed the ticket to some co-workers at the truck building plant.
"I didn't even have the truck door locked, and I had a $1 million ticket out there," he told lottery officials when he arrived today to collect his winnings. "Then I can't believe I let three or four guys at work hold my ticket and Google the numbers screaming, 'It's a $1 million.'"
Hucks told his co-workers he wouldn't quit his job but, "I'm not working anymore overtime."
While headed home, he called his girlfriend to share the exciting news and even pulled over to throw up, overcome at the outstanding odds.
Hucks was one of three South Carolina players to successfully match the first five numbers drawn Wednesday night. He bought his winning ticket at the MR Express at 2120 Nations Ford Rd. in Rock Hill.
He told lottery officials he's paying off his house and will be back at work tomorrow. Had he paid the extra $1 for Power Play, his $1 million prize would have been $2 million.
MR Express in Rock Hill received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
