TN lawmakers likely to consider school vouchers

Posted: Updated:

The state senate plans to move ahead with school vouchers even if the governor decides to hold off.

Gov. Bill Haslam is considering whether or not to make school vouchers a part of his agenda next year.

Any plan would likely allow low-income students to take state money and attend private schools, and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, said Tuesday he plans to make it happen next session.

"I do think it's just blatantly unfair that we doom children to failure simply because of the zip code they are born in. And their parents, if they choose, ought to have that choice," Ramsey said.

Ramsey said he believes the senate will take the lead on school vouchers next year.

He plans to make sure the committees are set up so that a voucher bill will have enough votes to pass.
