(WMC-TV) - The MED is not your typical Thanksgiving dinner destination but that is where Memphis police officer Willie Bryant and his family spent their holiday.
Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowery brought lunch for Bryant and his family. Bryant is the officer accidentally shot by a fellow officer while serving a drug-related warrant.
"Officer Bryant is in great spirits. He's smiling today. He's watching the football game. And he wants to say thank you very much to all the citizens of Memphis who have sent cards and letters and he's just a very happy man considering the circumstances," said Councilman Myron Lowery.
Bryant took a friendly fire shotgun blast to the lower back when police say a vicious dog lunged at his OCU team as it kicked in the door of a suspected crack house.
"On a day like today when I can go and have Thanksgiving with my family, he's going to have Thanksgiving in a hospital room," said Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins, who stopped by The MED, too.
Collins said he supports MPD always despite often contentious council business.
"I know sometimes it gets down to numbers and budgets and all those kinds of things, but at the end of the day they're human beings just like we are. We hurt like they hurt," said Collins.
That is why the councilmen brought Bryant and his family Thanksgiving Day lunch.
"Just a token of appreciation from the council and our staff to say thank you officer Bryant. He's a symbol of what we have in this city of public servants doing a great job," said Lowery.
