A 65-year-old man was charged Monday in connection with the shooting of another man outside a Lee's Summit home.
Ronald L. Hall faces first-degree assault and armed criminal action charges that resulted in Sunday's four-hour standoff with police.
A 1-month-old baby also had to be pulled from the home where Hall was at during the standoff.
The standoff started when Hall and other men were drinking at a home in the 200 block of Orchard Street while watching the Chiefs game, and they began to argue, court records state.
Police say Hall then shot the man in the front yard of the house and then ran back into the house as police arrived. According to court documents, the victim was shot in the face.
A witness told police he heard a loud noise and saw the victim fall to the ground. The witness then took the gun from Hall.
Authorities rushed the victim off to the hospital with life-threatening injuries about 4 p.m. Sunday. Investigators said the victim suffered a stroke and will likely have permanent injuries, including brain damage, because of the shooting.
When officers cleared the witnesses from the scene, police said no one told them there was an infant left sleeping inside.
"Once we got people away from the scene, things were safe, and people started being debriefed. That is when the information came to us, and that became our number one focus and priority," Sgt. Chris Depue said.
Police then set up a perimeter and evacuated neighboring houses to make sure no one would be in the line of fire.
Sarah Olsen, who is nine months pregnant, was one of the people taken out of her home.
"I'm supposed to be on bed rest for high blood pressure," she said. "When we found out about the baby, it got real scary and when they evacuated us. It was just a little nerve-wracking."
Tactical officers used a robot to find the baby near the front door, then sent in a small team to bring the child out safely.
Authorities were then able to negotiate with Hall and bring him into custody peacefully.
"It's exactly what we train for, and it is exactly what we plan for. It is the resolution that we are always looking for," Depue said.
Prosecutors have requested a $200,000 cash bond for Hall.
According to court documents, Hall's son said his father had been especially mean and ill-tempered since his mother died last year. Hall was taken multiple medications including anti-psychotic pills, according to court reports.
He said the group frequently quarreled but never before had Hall actually carried through on his threats of violence.
