Investigators comb river possibly for clues in TN-AL murders

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WSMV) -

There are new developments in a gruesome murder mystery.

Three weeks after six people, including a toddler were found dead near the Tennessee-Alabama state line, there may be movement in the case.

Investigators were back out Friday searching for evidence, and we're told they may have found something.

Next week will make a month since the bodies of Chabreya Campbell, her 18-month-old son Rico, Amber McCaulley and Jessica Brown were found in Lincoln County, near the Alabama state line.

Hours later the bodies of two more people were found, Jeffrey Pope and Warren Crutcher. Investigators said Crutcher was Brown's live-in boyfriend and at one point was also considered a person of interest in the murders. Since then it seemed the investigation had gone cold, until today.

Our affiliate WAFF in Huntsville, AL, reports crews with the Madison County Sheriff's Department in Alabama searched the Flint River Friday not far from where the bodies were found.

Several teams, some in boats, waded through the water poking around with sticks clearly looking for something, but investigators wouldn't say what. According to Willie Chism who owns the property, it's not the first time they've searched that river.

"It was about the third, no, maybe the fifth time. When they first started coming down about three or four weeks, they said they were looking for evidence for something," Chism recalled.

At one point one of the searchers pulled something from the river. When asked if they'd found anything, they said, "We have not found what we are looking for."

Investigators won't say if today's search was connected to the murder investigation, but people who live in that area said they were told it was.

We called the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation this afternoon to ask about Friday's search in Alabama.

Their spokeswoman said they weren't aware of the search and as far as they know there are no new developments.
