Gary Reese was murdered three years ago while he was out fishing, and his killer has never been found.
Family and friends gathered in a show of solidarity Thursday that Reese has not been forgotten and that their search for his killer remains steadfast.
Reese, 62, was found bludgeoned to death at a Columbia boat ramp where he had been fishing along Duck River.
Loved ones released balloons in the man's memory on an anniversary they never hoped to mark. Reese's brother, James Reese, said it still difficult.
"It's hard to deal with, because we don't have closure. It still seems like yesterday," James Reese said.
"I pray that somehow, someday they will find who did this," said family friend Debbie Lynch.
The motive in Gary Reese's death is unclear and may have been robbery.
"He stopped to get cigarettes, a cold drink and a candy bar," James Reese said.
The victim's brand-new 2009 pickup truck was found abandoned in Williamson County.
Columbia police also attended the balloon release Thursday and said they have not given up hope of finding the killer.
