LEBANON, KY (WSMV) -

A deputy in Marion County, KY, was killed early Wednesday morning during a traffic stop.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. ET, when police said Deputy Anthony Rakes, 31, initiated a traffic stop on a 2007 Kia.

Rakes, a 6-year veteran of the local sheriff's department, was shot during the stop and died at Springview Hospital while in surgery.

The suspect, Dewayne Shipp, 49, of McDaniel, KY, was later arrested in Campbellsville, KY, by state police and the Campbellsville Police Department during a traffic stop.

Shipp has been charged with murder and was taken to University Hospital in Louisville where he is being treated for a self inflicted gunshot wound. It is unknown when he sustained the wound.

An autopsy will be performed on Rakes Wednesday at the Medical Examiner's office in Louisville.
