NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The 18-year-old accused of shooting a Metro police officer last week was due in court for a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Eric Perkins faces attempted murder charges after Officer Faye Denson was shot in the leg last Monday.

Perkins was wounded when another officer, C.J. Fondaw, returned fire, striking Perkins in the chest.

Perkins was treated for his injuries and then waived his right to appear at Tuesday's hearing.

However, officers testified about what happened the day Denson was shot. Investigators said Perkins led police on a chase through east Nashville when he opened fire.

Fondaw explained the incident and said he told the suspect to drop the gun.

"(Perkins) was adjacent to a house and started shooting at me. That's when I returned fire and then the suspect dropped," said Fondaw.

The judge sent the case to the grand jury for review.

Denson was treated and released on the same day of the shooting. She is now recovering at home.
