Sanity of homeless murder suspect in question

Posted: Updated:

A court hearing was continued Friday in the case of a man accused of shooting and killing a homeless man last month as experts continue to evaluate the suspect's mental status.

Christopher Crowley is charged with criminal homicide in the death of Robert Mitchell on Oct. 18.

Mitchell was sitting on a park bench when investigators believe Crowley walked up and shot him in the head before driving away.

Howard Allen, a friend of Mitchell's, was homeless for nine years and said he met Mitchell on the very bench where he would later die.

"It hurts me to know that a man lost his life on the same bench I used to sit at, and it could have been me and it could be another homeless person," Howard said.

Experts are working to determine whether Crowley is mentally fit to stand trial. Crowley is expected to be back in court in about two weeks.

He's being held on $250,000 bond.

Metro police are also still actively investigating two other shootings involving homeless people in 2009 to see if there is any evidence that connects Crowley to those killings.
