Murfreesboro officer faces child abuse charge

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A Murfreesboro police officer has been decommissioned after he was indicted on a misdemeanor charge of child abuse.

Officer Anthony Whitehead, 39, is accused of physically abusing his 9-year-old daughter, according to a report filed Sept. 16 at the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

A detective said the child had excessive bruising on her buttocks and the back of her thigh after being disciplined by Whitehead.

Whitehead was released on $1,500 bond and will be placed on administrative duty as the case progresses, according to police department spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.
