Reward offered after toddler, parents shot

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police believe two gunmen sat and waited as two adults and a 2-year-old child arrived at a north Nashville apartment complex Wednesday night.

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the Knoll Crest Apartments in the 3300 block of Creekwood Drive.

The toddler was with his mother and father, identified as 25-year-old Philip Woodard.

The child's parents said they were getting out of their car when two men drove up and began shooting.

Now, a Metro councilman is offering a reward that leads to an arrest and conviction.

"One-hundred percent of the crime is committed by 4 percent of the community," said Councilman Walter Hunt.

Hunt represents the part of north Nashville where the shooting occurred. A number of shootings and other crimes have happened in the area, but Hunt said this most recent crime was especially unsettling

"You go out and do a crime in the 3rd District, we're going to put a reward out. We're not going to tolerate it, and it won't go unnoticed," Hunt said.

Woodward, the child's father, was holding the child when the shooting started. He quickly handed the toddler over to the mother as the shooters pulled the gun on her and continued to fire on the family.

The child was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital after being shot in the leg, while another bullet grazed his body.

Councilman Hunt said he is constantly looking for answers to the problem of crime in his community and others.

"It's the same kind of attraction anywhere. You got some idiots that don't think good," he said.

All three victims are expected to survive their injuries.

The shooters were described as two black men, one being about 6'3" and skinny. They were last seen driving a green Ford Crown Victoria.

Police are still investigating to find out what motivated the shooting.
