The Tennessee State University community is honoring the memory of a freshman football player who died this week after collapsing during practice.

A memorial is planned for 7 p.m. in the TSU student forum for William Wayne Jones III.

Jones 19, of Smyrna, became unresponsive around 4 p.m. Wednesday, and he was transported to Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to TSU officials.

Jones was a walk-on defensive back who graduated from Smyrna High School.

TSU Head Coach Rod Reed said Jones collapsed after the team completed sprints and were conducting some drills without pads. Trainers were at the practice but unable to resuscitate Jones.

In a statement, TSU Athletics Director Teresa Phillips said:

"This is a very tragic day for our entire Tennessee State University community and we are devastated by the sudden passing of this young man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time. Our University and our football team are hurting as we feel the loss of one of our own. As a team and a family we will grieve alongside the family and do everything we can to help support the family through this very difficult time."

Another memorial is planned for Friday at 5:30 p.m. and a rally is in the works for Monday. No other information on those events, or a funeral service, have been released.

The cause of Jones' death has not been released.
