Bulger's Beat: Donelson area transforms into trendy

Posted: Updated:

One Nashville neighborhood east of downtown is known as Donelson, but if the leaders of that community have it their way you could also start referring to it simply as "hip."

Frank Trew and other community leaders just wanted to get the word out that the area, named after Nashville founding father John Donelson, isn't old and tired.

Hip and happening is more than a state of mind in Donelson. It is now an attitude, with that new marketing logo stuck to businesses all over the place.

"You know, hip can mean a lot of things," he said. "But it just means we're kind of a happening town."

For proof, Trew points to hotspots like McNamara's Irish Pub and Restaurant or the Donelson Bowl.

Perhaps you might want a hip haircut. Chuck Scott has been cutting hair in Donelson for 42 years. If there was a hip haircut memo, he never got it.

"Well, if I don't personally know what it is, if they've got a picture of it, I can produce," Scott said.

"Hip" may not be his way to describe Donelson, but he does have his own word for the town he calls home.

"They've got a good way of life, just good people," he said.

T-shirts proclaiming the hip Donelson mantra have even been hot sellers. In just eight months, organizers have sold enough of them to raise $15,000.

All that money goes to the non-profit agencies doing good things in the neighborhood.
