GALLATIN, Tenn. (AP) - Sumner County voters have rejected a wheel tax increase, following a two-week delay in schools opening over funding issues.
The referendum to raise the wheel tax by $25 per year failed Tuesday by more than 60%. The increase was projected to bring in nearly $3 million.
Westmoreland retiree Joann Brown told WPLN Radio retired people on fixed incomes can't afford it.
Some people who voted against the wheel tax increase said the county commission should instead raise property taxes -the traditional method of school funding.
