It's a brutal crime that shocked even the most veteran officers in the Columbia Police Department. Now, a 3-month-old boy - who was abused so badly officers can barely talk about the details - has died.

"You never know what goes on with your next-door neighbor," Thomas Hayes said after learning police charged his next-door neighbor, Carlos Aguilar Sr., with abusing his 3-month-old son, Carlos Aguilar Jr., earlier this month.

Investigators with the Columbia Police Department came to the Aguilar home on Carter Street late Nov. 2 after social workers reported the possible abuse.

After questioning the boy's parents, police charged the 18-year-old father with aggravated child abuse. Following the baby's death Tuesday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the father faces an additional charge of first-degree murder.

"We have not discovered throughout the investigation what the motive is for what occurred," said Sgt. Jeremy Haywood. "It's something we're still working on right now."

"I'd have never thought that he would have done that," Hayes recalled.

According to Hayes, Carlos Aguilar Sr. always seemed happy, and he remembers the day the couple brought the baby home from the hospital.

"They had a sign on the door saying, welcome home whatever the baby's name is, and I said 'well, he's glad they brought the baby home,'" remembered Hayes.

Carlos Aguilar Sr. is in the Maury County jail without bond.
