Bulger's Beat: Dog agility competitions keep retiree active

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A retired Metro paramedic - who spent 38 years of his life in that high energy, high stress world - needed something high energy in retirement to keep him busy, and he's found it in his backyard.

Jim Holzemer and his 3-year-old border terrier, Rafe, are now on a mission for American Kennel Club agility ribbons.

"They were bred to just be out here, run around and do their thing," Holzemer said. "You've gotta be in shape to kind of move with him."

It's all good fun for Holzemer, his dog and, really, anybody watching.

"It's a lot of fun. It's not serious. You get out there and want to do it right, but it's just a lot of fun," he said. "Sometimes people talk about walking the dog, the dog walks you on this one."

Dog agility is a family operation at the Holzemer house. Jim Holzemer does the backyard prep work, and his wife, Lee, takes over and runs with Rafe at all of the American Kennel Club competitions.
