MTSU Poll: Romney with strong lead in Tennessee

Posted: Updated:

A new poll from Middle Tennessee State University shows voters in Tennessee are strongly favoring Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Among registered, likely voters Romney leads Obama 59 percent to 34 percent.

Romney is also winning big among independents in Tennessee - more than two-thirds support the Republican candidate.

In February, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum won the Republican primary in Tennessee. According to the MTSU poll, many Evangelical Christians who backed Santorum have now given their support toward Romney.

Bill Clinton in 1996 was the last Democratic presidential candidate to win the state of Tennessee.
