KY governor declares state of emergency

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear has declared a state of emergency in Kentucky in the snowy wake of Hurricane Sandy, which has dumped up to a foot of snow on portions of the state's mountain region.

Beshear said in an emergency declaration Tuesday that the storm has caused an emergency of national scope in the state.

Beshear signed an executive order Monday expediting the transportation of emergency supplies to storm victims.

The order directs the Transportation Cabinet to waive special registration and permit requirements for vehicles carrying relief supplies such as food, water and medicine. The waiver also applies to utility vehicles that are responding to power outages or removing debris.

Such vehicles don't have to pay permit fees for oversized or overweight vehicles.
