Some homeowners eligible for free foreclosure review

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The housing bubble of the recession left many homeowners owing more than their home was worth.  For others, the foreclosure process left them homeless.

If you lost your home to foreclosure, the federal government wants to take another look at your case.

They've extended the deadline for the Independent Foreclosure Review program until the end of the year.

If you were in the foreclosure process at any time during 2009 and 2010, you qualify.

"It could be a person who lost maybe a thousand dollars as a result of the process or someone who lost their home with a couple hundred thousand dollars.  People are getting checks in the mail as a result of this free process," said Ronald Clarkson of Housing Counseling Services.

The money is coming from part of a judgement against four of the largest lenders.

Homeowners can get counseling from HUD approved non-profit agencies all across the state for free.

Officials said if anyone tries to charge homeowners for help, it's likely a scam.

"Believe it or not, there are scammers out there who are copying the procedures of the Independent Foreclosure Review process," said Clarkson.

Below are a list of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved counseling services and who qualifies for a foreclosure review:
