NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A homeless man charged with attempting to kill a Nashville resident Friday morning inside a shelter was convicted of stalking a week ago.
Police said Gene Logue, 32, was arrested after attacking Christopher Lang, 42, inside the Room in the Inn shelter.
According to court documents, Logue stalked the victim while he sat in a chair. Logue then grabbed the victim's forehead and started to saw on his neck with a serrated hunting knife.
Witnesses said employees at Room in the Inn quickly moved to get Logue off the victim.
Logue told investigators he decided the night before to kill a Crip and believed the victim was a member of the gang. However, police said there's no indication that Lang has any gang affiliation.
Logue appeared in night court on charges of attempted murder, where bond was set at $1 million. He's being held on $1 million bond on the attempted homicide charge.
Witnesses said it happened quickly and they were surprised that something like this would happen at the shelter.
Lang, of Scovel Street, had come to Room In The Inn to sign up for an assistance program, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. He is expected to be released from the hospital on Friday.
Suspect previously accused of stalking
Logue was arrested for stalking on Oct. 8 after a downtown businesswoman reported that he repeatedly walked up and stared at her through her 12th Avenue South office window, even in the rain, over four days (Oct. 3, 4, 5 and 8).
Logue was convicted of first offense stalking, a misdemeanor, on Oct. 12. A trespassing charge also placed on Oct. 8 was dismissed. He was released from jail on Oct. 16.
