BRENTWOOD, TN (WSMV) -
For weeks, neighbors in one Middle Tennessee neighborhood have been concerned about blasting at a new, nearby construction site.
Now, the state has ordered the company to stop the work after flying rocks damaged a home and a car.
The Meadowlake subdivision in Brentwood is typically a quiet place, but something unusual happened this week and it has lots of people talking.
"Just glad nobody got hurt," said Robert Allen.
While working on a home on Hayeswood Drive on Tuesday, Allen felt some shaking, then heard falling debris.
A rock about the size of a grapefruit flew into his SUV, and another went through a family's roof next door. It got stuck in the ceiling.
"It was an accident. It was not supposed to happen," said Brentwood Fire Marshal Nancy Jones.
Jones said crews responded and found it is all related to blasting happening some 800 feet away, where a new city park and tractor supply company's headquarters are being developed.
"It was just a hole that blasted out because of a weak vein maybe," Jones said.
While city leaders cannot regulate blasting, the state can. And because of what happened this week, it has ordered Mountain States Contractors, the blasting company, to stop blasting for now.
"The blaster can submit a plan of corrective action, and that will be reviewed by the state," Jones said.
Other construction on the site is allowed to continue, just not the blasting for now.
Allen said despite what happened to his vehicle he is not against the blasters continuing their work and said the blasting company has been cooperative in making arrangements to repair his vehicle.
"I think they have to do what they need to do, but be cautious," he said.
The blasting company is expected to submit a corrective action plan by Friday.
