NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A 62-year-old man faces kidnapping and assault charges in connection with an abduction Wednesday morning.

James Oden is accused of abducting a 31-year-old man and his 3-year-old daughter in the Harding Glen condominium complex near Tampa Drive.

The victim, Laterris Drake, told officers that he was heading to his truck from one of the condos after a brief visit at 11 a.m. when a man came up from behind, stuck a pistol to his neck and ordered him to get into the truck.

Drake struggled with the man and he dropped the gun. Drake said the suspect managed to get on top of him and restrain him when another man, later identified as Oden, walked up wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a black bandana.

Oden picked up the gun and gave it to his accomplice, who again ordered Drake into the truck. Police said Drake complied and got behind the wheel while Oden and his partner got into the back seat.  Also in the back seat was Drake's 3-year-old daughter.

As Drake pulled onto Harding Place from Tampa Drive, he saw a police officer working an accident.

He drove up to the officer and once again struggled with the gunman. During the struggle, the pistol discharged. Police said Drake wrestled the gun from the suspect.

Both Oden and his partner immediately got out of the truck and ran. Oden was seen entering a condo in the "H" building at 270 Tampa Dr., where he was taken into custody.

The accomplice fled along Richbriar Circle. Detectives are working to confirm his identity.

The motive has not been determined and remains under investigation.
