The commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration spoke Monday in Nashville at Meharry Medical College.
Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg spoke at a convocation inside the Compton Nelson Auditorium.
Hamburg's family has ties to Meharry. Her grandfather, M.F. McCleary, graduated from the historically black college in 1901.
Hamburg was nominated FDA Commissioner by Pres. Obama in March 2009.
Prior to her FDA appointment, Hamburg was Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under Pres. Bill Clinton.
