Metro school needs votes to win NFL contest

Posted: Updated:

The Tennessee Titans won't be the only ones hoping for a victory this week as they host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The pre-kindergarten students at Kirkpatrick Enhanced Option School are in the running to win some money from the National Football League, and they need your vote to do it.

"Our classroom is blended, so we have friends who are typically developing peers, and we also have friends who have special needs. So, that can be everything from a developmental delay, to speech, to all different kinds of learning abilities and styles," said teacher Katie Elam.

The Titans face the Steelers at LP Field on Thursday night, and a classroom has been chosen to represent each team for a contest in the NFL's Play 60 program.

If Elam's class at Kirkpatrick receives more votes than the Pittsburgh school, they will get up to $1,000 to buy books and other materials for class.

"This project has lots of books in it - books that will help us teach lessons about being a good friend, being a good student, but also help us talk about being respectful and responsible and introduce character concepts that may be new to our kids," Elam said.

Anyone can vote once every hour until midnight Friday.

The team with the second-most votes will get a smaller prize of up to $500.
