ALGOOD, TN (WSMV) -

A former trucking company owner in Algood was charged with allegedly stealing thousands of dollars that were withheld from workers' pay for job benefits.

According to the Herald Citizen, William Michael Martin, 60, was indicted by a Putnam County grand jury this week on two counts of theft over $10,000 in the case.

Martin was arrested Thursday by U.S. marshals.

According to investigators, Martin used to own the Songbird Trucking Company and is accused of withholding money that was intended for employees' 401K and health insurance plans, but never paying it into those plans.

The indictment alleged that the funds were stolen between Jan. 2008 and April 2009.

Prosecutors said the case came to the attention of the U.S. Department of Labor after workers filed complaints alleging that they had learned they had no 401K or health insurance.

Martin was scheduled to be arraigned in criminal court Nov. 13.
