Dickson dentist holds free clinic Saturday

DICKSON, TN (WSMV) -

Dozens of people braved chilly, wet weather early Saturday to receive free dental care.

The Dentistry with a Heart clinic runs from 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Center for Dental Excellence on College Street.

Cory Thompson was one of the first people in line. He arrived at about 3 a.m. for a free dental cleaning.

"They're doing a really nice service for people, and they're doing it out of the goodness of their hearts," Thompson said of the volunteers at the clinic.

Dr. Stephen DeLoach has hosted the clinic every year since 2008. He expects to see about 150 people Saturday.

"Less than half the population of the United States makes regular trips to the dental office," DeLoach said.  "And if you're afraid of going to the dentist and (your teeth) are not hurting, it gets put off."

DeLoach says delayed dental care can lead to deadly infections.

"There was actually a case several months back of someone who died from a dental infection here in Nashville," DeLoach said.
