Couple sentenced for distributing painkillers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A federal judge in Nashville has sentenced a married couple to prison terms for distributing painkillers taken from a pharmacy where the wife worked.

Ken Stewart and Deborah Stewart had pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to distribute OxyContin.

The Tennessean reported the couple was convicted of stealing bottles of the drug over 10 months, and selling each 100-count bottle for about $2,100. Ken Stewart told the court he made about $83,000 from the illegal drug trafficking.

Deborah Stewart said the crime began when she accidentally brought home a bottle of OxyContin in her lab coat pocket.

Ken Stewart was sentenced to 46 months in prison. He is 57. Deborah Stewart, who is 46, received six months. The husband pleaded for leniency for the wife, who has multiple sclerosis.
