Wilson Co. must pay state $140K over jail transfers

LEBANON, TN (WSMV) -

Wilson County will have to pay the state back for money the state says it never should have charged.

It all concerns fees collected by Court Clerk Linda Neal's office. According to a letter from the Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts, Neal's office has been charging the state a $22 processing fee every time somebody was transported from the county jail to a hospital.

The state said the county was not supposed to be charging a court fee for every trip, and now Wilson County must pay the state $140,000 in return.

"I've been there 30 years. That's the way I was trained. A lady in my office, she's been there 20 years, that's the way she was trained. So, it dates back many, many years," Neal said.

The county's budget committee learned Thursday that the state has already withheld $38,000, and the Administrative Office of the Courts is now trying to collect the rest.
